Influencing diabetic nephropathy (DN) using low-frequency field with the frequency of 15 Hz in the form of rectangular pulses was proven on an animal model by the research team of Chinese Military Medical University (2016).
Diabetic nephropathy is a frequent diabetes complication and, at the same time, it is the main cause of chronic kidney failure. Based on previous studies, provided that symptoms of this disease can improve, influence of pulsed magnetic therapy on diabetic nephropathy were researched for diabetes of the 1st type – by immunology examination and based on kidney morphology using light and electron microscopy.
Both positive and negative effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy in the above-mentioned configuration have been observed. Expression of the endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) in kidneys has decreased. This factor, apart from other effects, supports new development of cells, i.e. symptoms of diabetic nephropathy might worsen. However, it is necessary to mention that, at diabetes of both the 1st and 2nd type, excessive activation of these growth factors (VEGF) has been identified both at animal and human models.
However, more important findings have been discovered based on light and electron microscopy. Both milder glomerular and tubular interstitial lesions and milder damage to glomerular basal membrane have been proven.
This shows that pulsed magnetic therapy, based on conclusions of this study, can relieve pathologic changes in kidney structure and could play an important role in treatment of patients suffering from diabetes and in decelerating of developing failure of kidneys in case of diabetic nephropathy.
