Influencing fibromyalgia in 56 women with low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was the aim of the medical team (Sutbeyaz et al.) in the 2009 study, which results were published in the Clinical Journal of Pain.
The point was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic therapy in women suffering from fibromyalgia, which is a chronic, non-inflammatory musculoskeletal syndrome, one of the manifestations non-joint rheumatism, characterized by widespread pain and stiffness.
56 women with fibromyalgia aged 18-60 years were randomly divided. 28 women (active group) underwent pulsed magnetic therapy and the remaining 28 participated in the control group with a placebo device. Therapy sessions took place twice a day for 3 weeks.
Results were gathered using FIQ questionnaire, which normally determines the degree of manifestation of symptoms of fibromyalgia. Visual analog scale was also used to determine the degree of pain. Finally, the patients’ overall response to treatment, including evaluation of their depression and moods, was assessed. All these evaluations took place 4 weeks and 12 weeks after the treatment.
The group, which underwent pulsed magnetic therapy, showed significant improvements in all points of evaluation, both 4 and 12 weeks after the therapy. The control group also showed some improvement, but the patients here experienced much worse fibromyalgia symptoms and pain worsened even more after 12 weeks.
The results of this study therefore clearly demonstrates that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy improves mobility, pain, fatigue and general condition of patients suffering from fibromyalgia and contributes with its long-term effects to patients’ quality of life.
