Promoting healing of long bone fractures with low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was tested on 58 patientsand the research team (Hong-fei et al., 2013) published the results in the scientific journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders.
Since the non-healing fractures and fractures with delayed union still represent a major problem especially in case of long bones, this randomized, placebo-controlled study attempted to improve treatment of these fractures.
All patients with a 16-week to 6-month delayed union of long bone fractures were randomly divided into active and control group. Patients in the active group underwent low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy and patients in the control group were exposed to sham devices. Both groups started at the same time their daily eight-hour applications.
According to the results, low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy achieved success rate of 77.4%. In contrast, the control group was successful only in 48.1% of fractures.
Pulsed magnetic field also contributed to much greater union of fractures. Moreover, it was evident that if pulsed magnetic therapy is applied as soon as possible after breaking of a bone, then healing time shortens considerably as this treatment promotes healing of fractures effectively.
